Wisconsin’s Green Fire holds webinar on imbalance of power in conserving resources and protecting the environment

GreenFire

Wisconsin’s Green Fire held a webinar on October 19 dealing with issues presented in its recent paper about state legislative actions, court rulings, and political practices that have undermined democratic processes and profoundly changed the way state government operates. “Today, instead of a robust balancing of public interests among stakeholders, a small number of groups representing industry, real-estate, and some agricultural interests now exercise a high level of influence over environmental programs, with direct implications for the health and welfare of Wisconsin citizens.”

The decade-long failure to take effective actions to address these issues is affecting health and quality of life and creating a growing financial burden to Wisconsin residents throughout the state, according to the organization, which consists of scientists and resource professionals advocating science-based environmental and conservation policies. The webinar featured six panelists who provided diverse perspectives on the effects of broken environmental rulemaking. Panelists included:

  • Fred Clark, WGF executive director
  • Paul Heinen, WGF legislative liaison
  • Lisa and Tor Anderson of the Town of Nelsonville
  • Meleesa Johnson, director of Marathon County Solid Waste Department
  • Mark Thimke, retired environmental lawyer and co-chair of WGF Contaminants of Emerging Concern Work Group.
